The Gaither Homecoming Bible

"The Gaither Homecoming Bible: Inspiring Hope through Scripture, Song, and Story" was sent to me for a review. Lately I have been getting mostly eBooks to review as I get them quicker; however when this Bible came up for review I wanted to see what it was all about.
I have always loved the Gaither’s music and video’s so I figured I would like the extras in the Homecoming Bible as well. I was more than correct in my thoughts. Included in the text are many features that I loved.
The first thing I loved was that there were scriptures that pertain to music that are highlighted throughout. As a sound man and also just a guy who loves music this is a cool feature when reading the Word.
The second thing that I loved was that they put in lyrics to some of the old Hymns and the storied behind them. It is always good to look back into the history of why and how the Hymns were written, and what the meaning is behind them. Learning the struggles and stories of those who have come before us will allow us to grow and to, maybe even, write new songs that will inspire those who come after us.
The third thing that I loved was that many of the Gaither Homecoming Friends have written little stories that appear throughout the scriptures. These stories share their lives with us and show how the word speaks to them. These stories or insights help to show that singers and writers are ordinary people who have ordinary lives.
The Bible is the New King James Version and is in a nice larger print. I would recommend this Bible to anyone who wants to add a nice looking Bible their collection.

He Chose The Nails

Max Lucado has always been able to grab my attention with his writing style.  He Chose the Nails was the same way. This book goes into details about the symbolism of the cross, from the soldiers spit, to the crown, to the sign on the cross, as well as the two other crosses, the nails and a few other things, the thought process walks us to the rest of the title, "What God did to Win Your Heart."
This book really paints a picture of how much God loved us and what He was willing to do for us. The love that the cross shows comes out in this short, fifteen chapter, easy to read book.  I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the crucifixion.
This book is a good read, not only for a new Christian but also for those who are ready for a fresh perspective, or those who need a new look at the cross. A device meant for torture, God used to bring us to Him.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with the love of God. This book will lead you to open your eyes and realize the true meaning of the title of the book.

Simply Grilling

Simply Grilling by Jennifer Chandler is a nice recipe book that should be added to any collection. She even helps those who may not have a grill by having many of her recipes available for indoor cooking with a grill pan. From appetizers to desserts she covers all the bases. There are different sections for the meats and she even suggests what sides go along with the main course. There is a full color picture of each recipe as well.

The book starts out with a grilling 101 section to help those who don’t know much about grilling but to also help those who think they may know about grilling. Some of the recipes are made inside and some of them have you inside and outside at the same time, but they compliment the grill recipes very nicely.

This is a book I will keep on hand and refer to each and every time I am interested in grilling. No matter the season with this little book you can grill anytime!

Eyes of Justice

Wow! If I had one word to say about Lis Wiehl’s new book Eyes of Justice, that would be it. Eyes of Justice, another book about the triple threat club is amazing and will keep your attention from beginning to end. I could not put it down and read the book in a day and a half.

As the other novels in the series we follow the lives of three ladies. Nicole, the FBI agent, Allison, the federal prosecutor, and Cassidy, a crime reporter for the local station are all back in this new novel, but something happens and one of them will not make it to the end. I say that because if you read the book description you will find that out as well. Who is it? How does it happen? Will they be able to find the killer? Can they even work on the case?

Follow along as they weave their way into finding out who the killer really is and what it will take to bring them down. Parts of the novel became a tiny bit predictable to me; however it is well worth the time and energy it takes to read this book. I highly recommend this book as well as any of the books in the triple threat series.

The Founders' Key

The Founders’ Key by Larry P Arnn is not only a quick read but also is one I would recommend to anyone who wants to know more about the connection between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

I was surprised to see that the book included the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and some of James Madison’s Federalist Papers for reference. I haven’t read these documents since college and it was nice to read back through them again and was a great help as I read through the book.

I definitely plan on reading this book again and I am sure I will pull more out of it then I did this time. The book centers on the connection between the Declaration and Constitution and how closely they are to each other. Mr. Arnn makes reference to how many in politics today try and lessen that connection.

Overall this book is a nice and easy read and I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in the Founding Fathers or those who have no idea who they are. We all need to take some time and learn from our past so that we can grow in the future as they would have wanted us too.

Heart of Ice

Another homerun! That is how I would describe this next installment of the Triple Threat Club. Heart of Ice, by Lis Wiehl and April Henry is riveting and will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the novel.

When multiple bodies turn up Allison, the federal prosecutor, and Nicole, an FBI Agent must figure out who is responsible. Insert Elizabeth who has the gift of manipulation and can get most people to do whatever she wants them to do. From getting free clothes to having people kill for her, she won’t stop until she gets what she wants. This poses a problem as she friends Cassidy, the reporter and third member of the triple threat club. Read along as the one hits close to home for all of the ladies as they search out the truth.

This book is full of twists, turns, and surprises that will keep you reading and not wanting to put the book down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mysteries. You will not be disappointed and you do not need to read the other books in the triple threat club, but they are just as exciting. This book is written with a Christian perspective but also tends to lean towards general fiction.

Why Men Hate Going to Church

Recently I have been thinking about Men and the Church. What does it mean to be manly and be a Christian? So when Why Men Hate Going to Church by David Murrow, came up for review I took a shot at it. I was excited to read this and I looked forward to seeing what this book could teach me. However I was not as excited as I finished the book which took me a long time as I really had to force myself to finish reading.

Mr. Murrow states that manly men who see God as the Lion of Judah will find church unappealing because the Lamb of God is the dominant image. He also talks about how many things in the church are feminized and that Men don’t want the image of “Jesus is my boyfriend.” While I agree most men don’t want the Jesus is my boyfriend image I also believe that everyone, men and women, need both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God. In large part we need them both because they are a part of God.

The main problem I have with this book is that it is not calling men to the church, but instead calling the church to men. The fact that he uses the terms manly man as the one who are out of the church is not only insinuating that the men in church are not manly but also prescribes to the worldly definition of what makes a man a man.

Overall, it was extremely hard to read through this book and took a lot longer than I would have liked it to take. I can’t recommend this book to the normal person, but there might be a few nuggets that a Pastor could pull out.
